Literacy Skill Focus: Main ideas, supporting details, determining importance

This activity is a fun and easy way to introduce young students to the concepts of main idea and supporting details.  Students should be led through this process the first few times before doing it independently.

After reading a selection, have each student trace his/her hand on paper. Have them pick out the main idea of the passage and write it in the palm. Then, have them pick out the 5 most important supporting details to write on each finger. You can also use this idea for a paragraph of text with 1 main idea sentence and supporting details. This is a great strategy to teach young students to use when they are learning to determine the most important information from a piece of writing.
